Applying the LTS

Evaluation of LTS courses

The Learning and Teaching Strategy was created to drive innovation in learning and teaching in our College.

It aims to cultivate a more systematic approach to the development of learning and teaching practices. This should initiate a cultural shift in staff and student approaches to learning: resulting in students able to take greater responsibility for their own learning.

The creation of the Strategy gives our College an excellent opportunity to assess what is working well and what changes might be most appropriate; it aims to provide staff with opportunities to respond to the changing needs of our students.

The Strategy is embodied in a number of Principles in key areas of learning and teaching, such as assessment, modes of learning and student support that have been used by teaching staff to make changes to improve the student’s experience and to help them become a responsible learner.

What is a responsible learner?

A self-motivated, self-enquiring, and adaptive student who is well prepared for future life.

What changes are happening in our College?

Courses in all seven Schools of the College are working with us to make changes to the teaching, learning and assessment practices in their courses. These changes have included revisiting assessment criteria, working in groups using the new teaching studios, providing alternative modes of studying to be as inclusive as possible. How these changes are making a difference to students on these courses, is being evaluated using quesitonnaires and focus group discussions.

The initial results can be found in this report PDF

More information on the evaluation process.

Why do we need to change?

Our students are changing and our teaching methods may have to change too. We need to respond to the way our students work and communicate (for example, the use of email, mobile phones and other social networking sites such as facebook are commonplace). To do this we must assess where we can make positive changes that will make a difference to our students.

What kind of support will I get?

The College supports these courses by offering resources in educational development, eLearning and Multimedia.  In future, the aim is to extend the number of courses who adopt these Principles and can benefit from similar innovation.
